I chose this story because of the way Christopher Lee chose to use images of places and moments in and after Davion Powell’s life along with portraits to illustrate a story about gang violence that led to his death. I met with Chis the day this story came out and he told me that he and Ali Watkins started on the project weeks before, but they waited for Damani Troutman to be comfortable with being photographed. Another choice that Lee made that made this story stick out to me was his use of digital scans of instant film. These techniques are new ways that I had not thought of using in a photo story before I saw it, and the amount of time that it took for the story to come together reminds me that a good photo story might take more time than I think.
