On August 9, 2017, the Michael Brown Chosen for Change Foundation held a memorial service to commemorate the death of Michael Brown who was shot three years earlier by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. There were four and a half minutes of silence, doves released, and a step dance group to close out the service. After the memorial a group of protesters held a demonstration at Ferguson Market & Liquor. A surveillance video made public by the documentary Stranger Fruit shows an interaction between Michael Brown and workers at the store that the filmmakers allege that he did not steal cigarillos on August 9, 2014. Later in the evening a candle light vigil was held at the same spot, and another demonstration was held on West Florissant Road.
