Several hundred white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, Virginia through the campus of the University of Virginia on the night of August 11. They started at Nameless Field and ended at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. When the march made it to the Memorial, the torch wielding protesters were met by a much smaller group of anti-fascists who had locked arms around the statue. After arguing and throwing insults a large brawl started. Tiki torches were used as clubs and pepper spray was deployed before police moved in.
As this was going on St Paul’s Memorial Church, which is across the street from the campus of the University of Virginia, was having a community prayer service. The building was surrounded by volunteer security and the police were close by.
This is the day before the “Unite the Right” rally is scheduled to take place where several different white supremacist groups will have one of the largest planned racist events in recent history in Emancipation Park in Charlottesville. All of the groups that were at the event in Pikeville, Kentucky that I covered will be there plus hundreds of other members of different white supremacists groups.
